Warwick University, located west of Coventry, was a regular haunt of King who played its student bars on many occasions as well attending many excellent gigs there. On January 31st 1985 the band performed at the universities Arts Centre. James Palmer attended the show which had been scheduled pre 'Love & Pride's' UK chart entry. Suddenly King were bona fide pop stars and both the crowds and bands excitement made for a memorable night.
The next morning James followed the band as they undertook promo duties in London including this photo session for an unconfirmed magazine article that was shot in the garden of a house in Camden Town.
As new pop sensations King were asked by the BBC to guest on a Radio One special from Paris with DJ Janice Long. Perry Haines and James Palmer joined the band in France. These photos find Janice and the lead singer moving around Parisian landmarks and next morning Perry and Paul hitting the flea market.
The groups Steps In Time outing of spring 85' was rehearsed on the stage of the Coventry Apollo and the opening night of the tour took place on April 6th. This was the same venue where Paul King had attended a David Bowie concert in 1973 - his first ever rock show - so it was a special event on many levels for the band and lead singer. James Palmer snapped the official crew tour photo outside the theatre and later that evening CBS records presented the band with gold discs for 'Love & Pride'
In June as one of the biggest new acts of 85' the group were invited to headline the Friday evening at that years Glastonbury festival. Torrential rain caused major road chaos leading into the venue so the band literally pulled up with seconds to spare and took to the stage in their travelling gear. Hence the more unusual snaps of Paul K performing in a leather jacket, tracksuit bottoms and DM boots instead of his trade mark stage suits.
The group left Glastonbury immediately post show for a concert the next day in Italy. The coach photo sees the band at Heathrow's car park with Dolphin Lovers assistants Leigh Johnson and Rhona Levene as well as security guard Alan.
On the UK leg of their Bittersweet tour King played two nights at the Birmingham Odeon. The second gig was November 20th, Paul's 25th birthday, so being next door to their home town a party was arranged post that nights show. James Palmer was in attendance organising crew and band for an official tour photo plus capturing the group sound checking pre show and Paul doing promotion at BRMB Radio. The following morning despite the hang overs more snaps were taken at the breakfast table of the Holiday Inn where Perry Haines and Paul are in conversation plus the bands health conscious security guard, Peter Guadi, who joined Paul for an orange juice.
James also took some fantastic pre-gig shots of the Birmingham crowd which we will be looking to place on the site in the near future.
